CELPE-BRAS (Certificate of Proficiency)
Celpe-Bras (Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese as a Foreign Language) is the only official Brazilian exam that certifies proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language. The exam is developed by the Instituto Nacional Anísio Teixeira (INEP), a Brazilian governmental organization which, among other matters related to the quality of education in Brazil, carries out official educational assessments and exams.
The Zentrale Sprachlabor at the HeiSKILLS Competence and Language Center at Heidelberg University is an authorized examination center for Celpe-Bras. This exam certifies the candidate at four levels of competence:
- Intermediate (equivalent to B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
- High intermediate level (equivalent to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
- Advanced level (equivalent to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
- High advanced level (equivalent to C2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
Registration for the exam is carried out on the official Celpe-Bras exam website. It is not necessary to indicate a specific level at the time of registration, as the result of the exam will determine the level of proficiency indicated on the awarded certificate.
The Brazilian Ministry of Education only offers two exam dates per year — so don’t miss the opportunity to register for the exam.
Next exam date: October, 2025
